Plans have been announced by Abbey National plc and the Halifax Building Society to combat the rapidly rising number of house repossessions, offering funds to housing associations and local councils for mortgage rescue schemes. The Chancellor has also announced the suspension of stamp duty and other measures agreed with mortgage lenders.
