The Severn estuary has long been the subject of electricity-generation barrage plans. Most favoured at present is a ten mile dam from Brean Down to Lavernock Point which would generate 7% of Britain`s electricity requirement and up to 35,000 construction jobs, but the cost to the environment, assessed here, could be enormous and requires thorough investigation.
