According to research by DTZ Debenham Thorpe and Nathaniel Lichfield & Partners for the British Council of Shopping Centres, published in "Town centre futures; the long-term impact of new developments", out-of-town shopping centres may have accelerated the decline of town and city centres but did not initiate it. Cites Sheffield, Newcastle and Dudley as examples.
