Three of Britain`s main building societies have announced results . Halifax , the largest managed a 6.5% increase in half yearly profits despite a sluggish housing market . Nationwide Anglia , the second largest is to close more than 150 of its 883 branches and shed 400 jobs due to losses on estate agency . Leeds Permanent , fifth largest, is closing 60 of 481 branches and the future of its 145 estate agency chain, Property Leeds is in the balance.
