The timber preservative pentachlorolphenol (PCP) should no longer be used for in-situ remedial treatment. Under the ninth amendment to the EC marketing and use directive, the government has been obliged to withdraw approval for the use of PCP after 1 July this year, although there are temporary relaxations on the use of the fungicide in `buildings of cultural, artistic and historic interest or in emergencies`.
