Ever increasing student numbers are creating an urgent need for educational and residential accommodation. To meet this, and to supplement the limited funds distributed by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, academic institutions are having to develop `strategic estates plans` to ensure appropriate spending and to demonstrate an ability to raise and repay loans. This article encourages professional input at the planning stage.
