British Coal currently has virtually unlimited permitted development rights to work underground at mines started before July 1948 and to explore for opencast coal. Its entitlement to compensation following adverse planning decisions also differs from that available to other mineral operators. Now, planning controls applying to British Coal and other mineral operators are to be standardised.
