Research by UBS, the stockbrokers, concludes that half the 1.3m households with negative equity would not be in debt had their property been financed by repayment mortgages. Households so affected rose by 200,000 in 1994 as anticipated revival in the housing market failed to materialise and house buying patterns appear to have changed.
