Changes to the landfill tax were announced in the Budget. They are: the standard rate of tax, applied to active wastes increase from £7 to £10 per tonne from 1 April 1999, the lower rate applied to inactive wastes is frozen at £2 per tonne and inert wastes used in restoration of landfill sites will be exempt from 1 October 1999.
