Presents data on forty case studies in order to provide an overview of the role of environmental assessment (EA) in the UK planning process. Discusses the findings for each stage of the EA process: project screening, scoping, preparation of the environmental statement (ES), ES review, formal consultation and participation, decision making, and implementation monitoring. Compares these findings with results previously published elsewhere, and suggests a number of steps which could be taken to improve the EA process further. Includes references.
