32 parish councils and the (CPRE) are fighting proposals to build 25000 new houses in green fields between Reading and Basingstoke. The public inquiry which opens on 6 October is regarded as a major test case of the SoS Environment`s commitment to protecting the countryside by maximising the use of recycled land.
