Argues that the increasingly intensive use of resources caused by a rising population and growing urbanisation will require a change in attitude towards the countryside. Currently viewed as something to be exploited, or conserved, we will need to come to view the countryside as a vital support for urban living, and countryside planning will need to become more positive to reflect this change.
