Landfill tax to encourage recycling

Rises in landfill tax were announced in the budget to encourage environmentally friendly alternatives. There will be a £3 rise in the standard rate from 1 April 1999 to £10 per tonne, followed by an escalator of an additional £1 per tonne each year.
