Service areas for beacon status

The DETR has invited English local authorities to apply for 'beacon status' in up to three of seven areas: community safety, education, housing, modernising planning, modern service delivery, social services, and sustainable development. The scheme is explained in The Beacon Council Scheme: how to apply which is available from the DETR (0870 1226 236). The closing date is 31 July 1999, and successful applicants can hold the status until 1 April 2001.
