Argues that planners are stuck in a policy vacuum over rural sustainability. Points to the fact that although the 1997 revision of PPG7 countryside guidance states that sustainability is the cornerstone of government rural and planning policies; broad objectives are outlined, but there is no guidance as to how sustainable developments are to be identified, assessed and monitored. To address this lack of policy guidance the rural planning group of The Land is Ours has published a report designed to provide a template for what local councils should be doing.
