Turbines are now 100 times more powerful than their 1970s predecessors, but are usually still more expensive than gas-fired power stations. Danish companies account for about 55% of the world industry. A Finnish company has designed a turbine using a vertical rotor which is more efficient, and quieter than the usual propellers.
