The Office for National Statistics fifth annual Survey of English Housing for 1997-98 has been published. Nearly 7/10 households are owner occupied, just over 2/10 rented from the council or a Registered Social Landlord, and 1/10 rented privately. This pattern varied according to ethnic group. Around 12% of households had moved in the previous year; 3/5 moves were local. More than 9/10 householders thought the people in their area were friendly, 2/3 thought crime was a problem in the area, and the majority thought services in their area were good.
