The Treasury has launched a public consultation exercise to decide whether mortgages should be regulated by the Financial Services Authority (FSA). Currently companies which only lend need only a consumer credit license. Consumer groups have complained that mortgage rates have not matched recent cuts in base interest rates. The Treasury has ruled out direct regulation of mortgage rates or home loan products.
