Reports on recent attempts by the government to reconcile conflicting environmental and social concerns in housing. This article highlights two issues: the provision of smaller homes to satisfy the demand by single people for houses and how the planning system can ensure that an excess of land is not released on the open market whilst shortages persist for affordable housing. Two more issues are highlighted in a future article.
