According to latest figures, council housing could disappear within the next ten years. Local authorities are unable to afford the £20bn cost in backlog repair. A record twenty five councils have applied to transfer 300,000 council homes to social landlords who are able to raise funds privately for refurbishment. The transfer figure is nearly a tenth of the remaining council housing stock in England. Graph.
