A High Court judge has ordered a landowner to honour an ancient liability to pay for repairs to the chancel of the local 13th century village church. The landowner's farm is a 'rectorial property' , making him a lay rector and people holding this title are liable for maintenance of the church chancel. This ancient custom is supported by the Chancel Repairs Act 1932.
