Land use for food production 2015

North, J.J.

Land use for food production 2015 - Journal of the Royal Agricultural Society of England .

Land budgets for the year 2015 are constructed, using opposite scenarios, the market scenario which provides the most economically efficient solution and minimizes the area of land used for food production, and the extensive scenario, which maximizes it, using new technologies but decreasing the use of nitrogenous fertiliser. The costs of the latter to taxpayer and consumer are higher than the costs of the former. The two budgets are compared and their implications considered. Political decisions are necessary to secure either alternative and it is felt that in the long term the most likely solutions will be towards the market scenario. 5 tables.
