Building on contaminated land - 2000 - Faculty of Building Journal 9(5) October 2000, 8-9(2) .

Examines the necessary procedures to reuse contaminated land in accordance with the ethos of sustainable development. The first stage is the clean-up of contaminated sites. This involves: undertaking a field study to discover the history of the site; completing a site assessment of the contamination present and risk assessment; formulating an amelioration strategy. Lists the different options available for the amelioration strategy, and highlights the pros and cons of each clean-up method. Discusses the building construction process, and emphasises the importance of choosing a suitable foundation design. Concludes that the environmental advantages and cost savings should be considered when choosing which method to employ to reuse contaminated land.
