Government's decision to award 22 new rail franchises for the extended period of 20 years has handed rail operators, such as Richard Branson's Virgin Rail Group, the opportunity to see a return from property investments in and around stations. This month Virgin will find out whether its bid for the London-Edinburgh line has been accepted. This includes £40m improvements to existing stations. All the new and improved stations will provide opportunities for commercial and retail schemes.
