Lessons from the US: how to improve the residential investment sector - 2000 - CSM (Chartered Surveyor Monthly) November / December 2000, 18-19(2) .

Compares the UK private rented sector (PRS) with the US situation. At present the weakness of the PRS in providing a source of consistently high quality accommodation for the community is failing a large proportion of the UK population; a situation which should be improved along the lines of the US model of Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITS). The UK has an under-developed PRS which does not deliver quality homes where they are required but if anything is to be done, it should be with more government support to provide an acceptable vehicle, like the REITS and encourage more institutional involvement and more responsible landlords.
