Government has published proposals to improve the quality of urban living and the teaching environment by upgrading standards of sound insulation. The proposals will cover new houses and self-contained flats and extend to hotel rooms, hostels, student accommodation, nurses' homes and elderly persons' homes as well improving acoustics in classrooms. The changes means that builders will be able to meet consumer demand for high-quality, single-person units in urban areas. "Building" considers the implications for housebuilders. The consultation papers can be found at http://www.construction.detr.gov.uk/coindex.htm
