Hopes of clarifying ownership rights over items sold at auction on the Internet have been dashed with the settling out of court of a potentially precedent-setting case. The dispute concerned when a buyer at auction on the Internet can safely consider themselves to be the rightful owner of the item sold. In this case the judge would have had to rule on exactly when title passes to the buyer at auction on the Internet, especially as this has implications for 'back-to-back' sales.
