Brussels to give £2.6bn in regional aid

The European Commission has announced £2.59bn in aid over six years for ten UK regions. The grants from the EU structural fund will allow the creation of 277,000 jobs in east England, east Wales, Hastings, London, the North-East, the North-West, Scotland, the South West, Thanet, the West Midlands and Yorkshire and Humberside, and the safeguarding of a further 100,000. The funding is conditional on further investment from the public and private sectors in the UK and should result in a total spending of 27.78bn Euros by 2006.
