Plans by the Health and Safety Commission to set up a register of potentially dangerous homes could lead to surveys of over 20m properties for asbestos. The scheme, which aims to allow construction workers and tradesmen to check for asbestos risk before they start work on a property, could cost £4bn if the planned inspections go ahead. It is estimated that more than 6m tonnes of blue and brown asbestos remain in buildings across the UK.
