The government has announced measures to encourage farm diversification and extend the current village shop rate relief scheme to other small rural businesses. The schemes proposed in the Rating Bill will mean mandatory rate relief of 50% to new small-scale non-agricultural businesses on farms for the first five years with local authorities having discretion to increase this to 100%.
