In response to criticism, following a recent spate of high-profile closures, (Corus,Vauxhall, Ford) Trade and Industry secretary Steven Byers has announced plans to review arrangements in the UK on mass redundancies. This will consider whether new legislation should be introduced that would require large employers to consult more with their workers before redundancies are announced. Suggests any such new legislation would bring the UK into line with other more heavily regulated European Union states. Looks at employer/employee relations and employment costs across Europe, and considers how far these are likely to affect occupiers' locational decisions.
