Since March 1990 the hard hat has been compulsory on British building sites. Notes that in contrast to a basic motorcycle helmet, which would cost around £75, at approximately £3 the hard hat is exceptionally good value. With safety now top of the industry's agenda once again, and taking into consideration the fact that the design of the hardhat has not altered radically for almost a century, suggests it may be time to reassess the hard hat. Notes that the current hats jeopardise health and safety due to their unpopularity, being widely regarded as uncomfortable and unfashionable.
