A series of articles looking at the implications for local authorities of Part IIA of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Considers the legislation, which requires councils to draw up contaminated land strategies by the end of June 2001. Describes how some local authorities are finding that GIS can help speed up this process. Notes that once the strategies have been drawn up, councils are likely to find themselves swamped with land remediaiton applications. Discusses the risk assessment process, and stresses the importance of the various regulatory departments working together.
