According to the Government's Chief Scientific Adviser Professor David King the foot-and-mouth epidemic may have peaked with the firebreak cull policy of slaughtering all animals on infected farms within 24 hours of detecting the disease and all those on neighbouring farms within 48 hours helping to bring the disease under control.
