30 of the 43 communities which are to receive approximately £1m each in a £43m package for market towns are in areas affected by foot and mouth disease, including Devon and Northumberland. The funding, first proposed in the rural white paper in November 2000, will go towards regeneration, including improving rural public transport and tourism.
