Urbanisation and the growing size of modern cities in terms of population and physical scale has prompted the international community to consider the issue of urban sustainability. Article describes a number of ways in which cities can achieve sustainability. Areas of discussion include reducing environmental impact, pursuing a circular metabolism with lower inputs and outputs, and adopting new initiatives such as urban agriculture. Diagrams.
