Figures from the British Bankers Association show mortgage lending rose by £2.6bn in April to a new high, whilst the Council of Mortgage lenders reported a 27% increase in loans on April 2000. Data from the Halifax also showed that April saw the largest price increases since Autumn 2000, with annual house price inflation running at 5.7%, fuelling concerns about a sudden correction. Expects predict, however, a slowdown rather than an 1980s style slump.
