Tests at the Pirbright Laboratory have shown that 30% of farms confirmed as infected with foot and mouth by vets showed no sign of the disease, with only 46 cases identified among 250 slaughtered on suspicion of infection. The announcement comes as a test case, which could lead to a huge compensation claim against MAFF from farmers who lost healthy animals in the cull, is prepared. Farmers working under form D notices, which restrict animal movements for up to 28 days, have also warned that they face bankruptcy unless compensation and welfare payments are increased.
