A new European Union directive, reluctantly adopted by the UK government, compels companies to inform and consult employees on a range of internal economic and financial issues. This will be an added bureaucratic burden for large and medium-sized contractors. Firms with over 150 staff are expected to adopt the practices in 3 years time; those with 100-150 employees in 5 years time; and firms with over 50 employees in 7 years time.
