According to the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT), buildings are responsible for 50% of carbon dioxide emissions in the UK. CAT, an educational charity founded by Gerard Morgan-Grenville in the mid-1970s on a 40 acre site of a disused Welsh slate quarry, aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the UK by encouraging the development and use of environmentally-friendly buildings and energy sources. At its base in Wales, CAT currently has seven acres open to the public where environmentally sound buildings, working examples of water, solar and wind power, and energy conservation techniques can be viewed. Describes the features and sustainable construction methods used to build The Straw Bale Theatre and the Autonomous Environmental Information Centre.
