Outlines the provisions and requirements of inherent defects insurance (IDI) which provides cover for 10-12 years after practical completion against the cost of remedial works necessary due to poor design, materials and workmanship without the need to prove negligence of a third party. The policy, which can be taken out by any party or combination of parties, requires the appointment of an independent consulting engineer, known as the technical auditor (TA), who monitors the project from design though construction and acts as the insurer's risk assessor.
