Ken Livingstone, the London Mayor, failed in a legal challenge to overturn government's plans for partial privatisation of London Underground. This failure could mean private bidders starting work by next January if contracts were signed by the end of the year. However contractors warn that it could take more than 15 years to bring the Tube up to standard. A brief timetable of intended improvements is included.
