All valuations of animals slaughtered because of FMD will be made by an independent valuer appointed by DEFRA. If the valuation is disputed the owner retains the right to notify DEFRA in writing within 14 days; the case may proceed to arbitration. The decision to value at standard rates was done to speed up the culling and encourage farmers to come forward.
