19th century cast-iron beams: their design, manufacture and reliability

Swailes, T.

19th century cast-iron beams: their design, manufacture and reliability - 1996 - Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers February 1996, 25-35(11) .

Describes 19th century practice in the design, manufacturing and testing of cast-iron beams and, by analysing contemporary reports of structural failures, shows that decline in the use of these beams had less to do with mistrust of the material by engineers than was popularly believed. Use of these beams is considered in the context that they are still in service in many public buildings, textile mills and warehouses.
