Small businesses hit by the foot and mouth epidemic owe £103m in deferred tax. At the onset of foot and mouth, small businesses were allowed to delay payments to the Inland Revenue, and so far 43,374 companies have asked for deferred payment. The debt is adding to concerns that thousands of rural businesses will fold as a result of the crisis.
