A report by Datamonitor showed that the household insurance market faced £3bn in claims in 2000 - the largest figure for ten years - flooding being the main reason. Insurers warn government that it must improve flood defences if they are to quarantee continued cover for households and small businesses. Insurers urge for the making of flood defences to be a spending and planning priority. Roughly 1.7m homes and 130,000 commercial premises in England are in areas at risk of flooding.
