In 1997 a new clause was inserted in the revised version of PPG7 that seemed to push the door ajar for a new wave of large homes in the English countryside. Discusses the findings of new research, four years on from the revision of the planning guidance, investigating whether the tradition of country house building has been restored. The researchers also examined whether local authorities are including policies for new country houses in local plans. The key overall finding was that authorities remain nervous about granting planning permission for new country houses.
