At the end of its first year of operation, the chief inspector of housing at the Audit Commission reflects on the aims, findings, and intended modifications to its operating procedures, of the Housing Inspectorate. Stresses that one of the main lessons learnt this year is that better performing services are most likely to be achieved if the Inspectorate works closely with councils during their review phase, as well as during the formal inspection. A specific key finding was that repairs and maintenance is an area in which most councils need to improve their services. The inspections found that many authorities lack a long-term strategic approach to their investment decisions. Diagram.
