The government report, "The national appraisal of assets at risk from flooding and coastal erosion", estimates that about 1.5m ha or 12% of UK agricultural land, with an estimated value of #7bn, is at risk from flooding or coastal erosion. The report recommends that investment in flood and coastal defences be increased by 65% with a further 20% increase to cover the predicted effect of global warming. Farmers are warned of likely further flooding this winter.
