A retail renaissance for our town centres

Johnston, B

A retail renaissance for our town centres - 2001 - Planning (for the Natural and Built Environment) 12 October 2001, 15-17(2) .

Examines current trends in the retail sector which include the revival of town centre retail developments. Points to the Bull Ring shopping centre in Birmingham as an illustration of city centre shopping as encouraged by the revised PPG6 and discusses the impact of PPG13 and the Kyoto agreement on Bristol's Cribbs Causeway. Highlights the success of provincial shopping centres which are out performing London and the South East, and suggests that out-of-town sites are still booming in spite of PPG6. Concludes that a new stance on retail planning may be required to overcome restraints such as hierarchial models. Table.
